THE NAR’S ROOT SYSTEM
You will know a tree by it's fruit....
William Branham is not considered a founder of the modern New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), and C. Peter Wagner, who coined the term "New Apostolic Reformation," did not identify Branham as one of its founders. However, Branham's teachings profoundly influenced several streams that later fed into the NAR and the broader prophetic/apostolic movement.
Think of it this way:
William Branham → Latter Rain Movement → Restoration Movement → Kansas City Prophets / Prophetic Movement → NAR
The influence is more genealogical than organizational.
1. The Healing Revival (1946–1958)
Branham is widely regarded as the father of the modern healing revival.
Many well-known healing evangelists were influenced by him, including:
Oral Roberts
T. L. Osborn
A. A. Allen
Jack Coe
Gordon Lindsay (who promoted many healing ministries)
These ministries helped normalize:
healing lines,
words of knowledge,
miracles,
prophetic ministry.
Those emphases later became common within many charismatic churches, including some associated with the NAR.
2. The Latter Rain Movement
This is probably Branham's strongest historical connection.
Although he was never officially part of the Latter Rain movement, he became one of its major influences.
Latter Rain emphasized:
restored apostles
restored prophets
laying on of hands for impartation
prophecy
end-time restoration
the "Manifest Sons of God"
the Fivefold Ministry
Many of these concepts later appeared within NAR teaching.
3. Restoration Theology
Branham believed:
The church had lost truth after the apostles...
and God was restoring it in the last days.
This "restoration" idea became foundational to later apostolic movements.
Examples:
restoring apostles
restoring prophets
restoring miracles
restoring signs and wonders
4. Modern Apostles
Branham increasingly viewed himself as:
Elijah
the messenger of Revelation 10
God's end-time messenger
While most NAR leaders do not identify Branham as Elijah, they similarly believe God is restoring modern apostles and prophets.
This is one of the strongest conceptual connections.
5. Personal Revelation
Branham emphasized:
visions
dreams
supernatural revelation
angelic visitations
Many NAR ministries likewise place significant emphasis on:
prophetic words
dreams
visions
encounters
heavenly experiences
Critics argue that in some settings these experiences can function with an authority approaching that of Scripture, though NAR leaders generally deny that they are adding to the biblical canon.
6. Signs and Wonders
Branham taught that miraculous signs authenticated God's messenger.
Many NAR teachers emphasize:
miracles
healing
deliverance
prophecy
as important confirmations of ministry.
7. Dominion Theology
Here's where people sometimes overstate the connection.
Branham himself did not teach the Seven Mountain Mandate.
Nor did he teach dominion theology in the form promoted by some modern NAR leaders.
Those ideas developed later through:
C. Peter Wagner
Lance Wallnau
Bill Bright
Loren Cunningham
So it would be inaccurate to say Branham taught Seven Mountain theology.
8. Impartation
Branham emphasized:
impartation
laying on of hands
spiritual anointing
These practices later became common in many charismatic circles and in ministries associated with the NAR.
9. The "Message" Movement
Many people confuse:
The Message Movement
with
The NAR.
They are not the same.
Many NAR leaders reject Branham's:
Serpent Seed doctrine
anti-Trinitarian theology
unique claims about himself
Likewise, many Branham followers reject the NAR.
They are distinct movements, though there are historical points of contact.
